Launch of EarthCARE, an ESA Earth Explorer Mission for More Accurate Climate Predictions and Weather Forecasts, with SPACEBEL Involvement
Set for departure into Space on a Falcon 9 rocket from the Vandenberg Space Base in California (USA), on May 29th 2024, EarthCARE (Earth Clouds, Aerosols and Radiation Explorer) is a European mission developed in close cooperation with JAXA, the Japanese Space Agency, since 2008. SPACEBEL has contributed to the software development of the EarthCARE Mass Memory and Formatting Unit.

DELTATEC at 4S SYMPOSIUM
From May 27th to 31st 2024, DELTATEC actively participated in the 4S Symposium (Small Satellites Systems and Services), co-organised by CNES and the European Space Agency (ESA).
DELTATEC presented its latest work on the advantages of a hybrid electronic architecture integrating COTS and rad-tolerant components, such as the ones used in the ELOIS payload computer and CSIMBA hyperspectral camera projects.07-05-2024 -
EHP : Cleanroom Test Facilities and Business Focus
(1) EHP offers its thermal and mechanical testing facilities (vacuum tanks, shakers, climatic chamber, etc.) to external local players as a service for their tests. Most of these are in cleanrooms.
(2) In collaboration with Agoria and RTBF (programme "Merci d'y avoir pensé!"), EHP has produced a video clip featuring a young female engineer at EHP, to promote engineering professions among young people and the integration of ecological components in industry:

Aerospacelab Successfully Acquires AMOS

Destination Moon at the Euro Space Center
The Euro Space Center, Europe's unique Space theme park, organised a special "Destination Moon" weekend on March 16th-17th 2024. It was an exceptional weekend to explore our natural satellite like never before, with activities designed to amaze the whole family. 850 people attended the event!
In addition to the classic Space Day activities, visitors were able to discover the different ways of observing the Moon, take part in space capsule construction and lunar painting workshops, explore the field of robotics, discover the Moon during an exciting show explaining the formation of craters, and taste meals conceived for astronauts.20-03-2024 -
Proba-3, Europe’s Upcoming Sun Watcher, Is Heading into the Home Stretch with SPACEBEL Technology
Proba-3, ESA’s first formation flying mission meant to study the outer atmosphere of the Sun, is now fully integrated and has successfully completed its testing milestones.
SPACEBEL is one of the industrial core team members of the Proba-3 consortium under the leadership of Sener (Spain), prime contractor.

SPACEBEL Contributing to MINEYE, a European Project for Resilient Mine Life Cycle Monitoring
The kick-off of the European R&D innovation action MINEYE is a fact. This new project, which was granted a funding of almost 6 million Euros under Horizon Europe, is meant to improve the mining value chain at all levels in order to increase Europe’s access to valuable and strategic minerals or metals. The objective is also to limit the environmental impact of mining activities in general.

4 Aerospacelab Satellites Heading for the Vandenberg Space Base
At the beginning of January 2024, four satellites (three SIGINT and one VHR) left Aerospacelab's facilities for a trip to the Vandenberg Space base in California to be properly integrated into launch vehicles. With all the payloads and platforms developed in-house, the design and manufacture of these 4 satellites once again demonstrates the usefulness of Aerospacelab's VSP, i.e. a versatile satellite platform to support Earth Observation and Communication missions.

SPACEBEL Kicks off 2024 on a High Note with a Major Comet Interceptor Contract
First European deep Space mission to visit a pristine comet or interstellar body entering the inner Solar system, Comet Interceptor will offer new insights into the dynamic nature of comets as well as the origins of our solar system.
SPACEBEL has recently signed an important agreement with OHB Italia S.p.A. (Milano), prime contractor of the Comet Interceptor mission, a programme of and funded by the European Space Agency. The said contract regards the provision of the Central Software that manages the whole spacecraft, its platform equipment and its payload instruments.15-01-2024 -
AMOS Contracted by TMT International Observatory to Design and Build Secondary Mirror Support System and Positioner
The TMT International Observatory (TIO) contracted AMOS to design and manufacture the secondary mirror support system and positioner (M2SSP) of the future extremely large Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT). Once constructed, the TMT telescope will have a 30-meter primary mirror and be the largest ground-based, optical telescope in the northern hemisphere.

Second AMOS telescope delivered for the Magdalena Ridge Observatory Interferometer
Last June, Amos delivered a brand-new telescope to the Magdalena Ridge Observatory (New Mexico, USA). This telescope, the second unit in a series of 10 telescopes, was designed and built by Amos in its Belgian facilities located in Liège. It was transported to the United States by boat and then by truck and safely arrived on site in January 2023. Amos’ team took care of the installation and the customer, New Mexico Tech (NMT), officially accepted the telescope last June after a series of validation and performance tests. This new telescope joins the first telescope delivered by Amos several years ago.

EPC for SSPA, a new challenging application for DC/DC converters

Euclid on Its Way to the Launch Pad... With SPACEBEL Software
Following a series of comprehensive tests at the Thales Alenia Space premises in Cannes, Euclid, carrying SPACEBEL on-board software, has embarked on a sea voyage to Florida (USA), where the spacecraft is due to arrive at the beginning of May.
The lift-off on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral is to take place in July 2023 with an orbit around the Lagrange point L2, at some 1.5 million km from Earth, in the opposite direction to the Sun, as its final destination.25-04-2023 -
The University of Liège involved in the JUICE space mission
Launched on an Ariane 5 rocket, the European Space Agency's JUICE probe set off into Space from Kourou in French Guiana. This is an important new Space mission to study Jupiter and its moons, to which researchers from the University of Liège and the Centre Spatial de Liège (CSL) have been bringing a significant contribution.

On March 28th, Wallonie Espace and Skywin, in cooperation with the Euro Space Center, had the pleasure to welcome Minister Willy Borsus, Vice-President of Wallonia, Minister of Economy, Foreign Trade, Research & Innovation, as well as several Space experts for a conference dedicated to the new strategy of the sector and the tools put in place for the benefit of research, industry, education and promotion of Space activities in Wallonia.
Several topics were on the agenda:
- the industrial projects carried by 5 consortiums in the framework of the Walloon Region's recovery plan in the fields of Earth observation and future reusable launchers;
- the structuring of Space research in Wallonia for the benefit of these sectors via the Space4relaunch project,
- the creation of the Joint Research Institute for Space (JRI4Space),
- the Technological Platforms of Excellence (PTE),
- the arrival of a quantum computer in the Galaxia economic zone (Cyber Excellence)
- the planetarium project at the Euro Space Center.
The event was a real success thanks to the quality of the proceedings and the large number of participants.

Raphaël Liégeois, New Belgian Astronaut, Back at ULiège
A few days before starting his astronaut training at ESA's European Astronaut Centre in Cologne, Raphaël Liégeois was back at the University of Liège. "Back" because he graduated in 2011 as a Civil Biomedical Engineer and, three years later, as a Doctor in Engineering Sciences from the University of Liège.

3 Million Euros for the First Walloon Planetarium at the Euro Space Center
The Minister of Tourism, Valérie De Bue, and the Vice-President and Minister of Research, Willy Borsus, are releasing €3,431,407 for the construction of a planetarium on the site of the Euro Space Center in Transinne. The planetarium will be the first in Wallonia. It will also increase the offer of business tourism in Wallonia as it will be available for events and will be located near an economic activity park.

CNES and SPACEBEL Pursuing Their Strategic Partnership
As a major player of the European Space sector, the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES) designs and participates in numerous Space programmes. In that context, the French space agency is required to develop, maintain and operate Space systems as well as ground segments. Hence the importance of framework agreements with companies or company consortia.
Following a negotiated tender procedure, CNES in Toulouse has recently extended the renewal of several framework cooperation agreements with SPACEBEL until 2028.26-01-2023 -
The European Southern Observatory (ESO) Celebrating Its 60th Anniversary with ULiège
Since 1962, the University of Liège has maintained close relations with the European Southern Observatory (ESO). From the first Belgian representatives at ESO, who were pioneers from Liège and very much in favor of this astronomical adventure in the southern hemisphere, to the discovery of the TRAPPIST-1 system of exoplanets by a ULiège telescope installed on an ESO site, and including technological and instrumental developments for the VLT and the future ELT, the University of Liège has a long history with ESO.

Aerospacelab Wins Scale up of the Year
EY, in collaboration with BNP Paribas Fortis and L’Echo, announced Aerospacelab to be the Scale-up of the year (Scale-Up de l’Année). The prize is awarded to young companies based in Brussels or Wallonia, which are in full development with great potential with regards to innovation, entrepreneurship, and strategy. Minister of Economy Willy Borsus, vice-president of Wallonia, presented the trophy to Benoît Deper, the founder of Aerospacelab.

SPACEBEL Secures a Contract in the Frame of the European IOD-IOV Initiative
Thanks to this new agreement, SPACEBEL is in charge of several software developments concerning a new ESA mission for concept testing in orbit built and operated by QinetiQ Space (Kruibeke - Belgium). Capitalising upon the hardware and software Altius technology “Made in Belgium”, the IOD/IOV spacecraft will carry about a dozen small demonstration payloads and be compatible with different types of launchers.

Change of Launcher Confirmed for Several ESA Missions with Important SPACEBEL Participation
Due to the interruption of Soyuz launches from Kourou and the postponement of the Ariane 6 maiden flight to the last quarter of 2023, ESA had to temporarily revise the launch planning of several missions. Among them the Euclid Space telescope, the Hera probe and the European-Japanese EarthCARE observation satellite, all originally scheduled to launch on a Soyuz rocket and to which SPACEBEL has been bringing our software engineering expertise. Successful Belgian Space Week at ULiege
The Belgian Space Week took off at the University of Liege, on Monday, October 17, 2022. Accompanied by seven astronauts, Dirk Frimout participated in a school morning that gathered more than 500 schoolchildren around questions related to their space travels and in a meeting with space professionals at Centre Spatial de Liège (CSL) to discuss the future of the sector in Belgium.

AMOS delivers a critical piece of the upcoming world’s largest telescope: the reference body of the adaptive mirror of ESO’s Extremely Large Telescope
AMOS delivered to Mersen Boostec the polished reference body that will carry the 2.4 m adaptive mirror of the largest telescope in the world, ESO’s Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), a giant telescope under construction in Chile, with a primary mirror of 39m in diameter and a height of 60 m. It will allow to see the first stars that appeared in the universe, to directly image exoplanets and analyze their atmosphere and many other scientific firsts.

NASA’s DART Making History... and Paving the Way for ESA’s HERA Mission with SPACEBEL Technology
On the night of September 26–27th 2022 the world witnessed the first-ever human attempt to change the orbit of a celestial body for the sake of planetary defence. At 01:15 AM Belgian time, the US DART probe purposefully smashed into Dimorphos, the 160m wide moonlet of the larger Didymos asteroid at some 11 million km away from Earth.
Set to fly off into Space in 2024, ESA’s follow-up mission Hera and its cubesats Milani and Juventus will investigate the aftermath of the kinetic impact.

SPACEBEL Marvels at Latest Cosmic Reveals from Groundbreaking Star Gazer GAIA
Since its launch in December 2013, ESA’s Gaia satellite carrying SPACEBEL state-of-the-art on-board software, is setting up the most accurate 3D chart of about a billion objects throughout the Milky Way and beyond, mapping their motions, luminosity, temperature and composition. Its 3rd data release made public in June 2022 provides even more information on our galaxy’s past, present and future with the most detailed Milky Way survey to date.

Launch goes green with Spaceport hydrogen plan… ULiège and BeBlue are involved
ESA, the French space agency CNES and a group of industrial and academic partners have set in motion an ambitious plan to slash CO2 emissions associated with orbital launches, by establishing infrastructure to underpin a hydrogen economy supporting Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana.
The project – known as Hyguane (HYdrogène GUyanais A Neutralité Environnementale) – aims to establish a pilot plant within the Spaceport capable of producing 130 tonnes per year of so-called green hydrogen, with the goal of dramatically reducing Spaceport greenhouse gas emissions.06-07-2022 -

ULiège Astronomers active in Gaia
On 13 June, the European Space Agency (ESA) published the new Gaia catalogue, which is the largest, most detailed and most accurate catalogue of the Milky Way to date. This third release of data from the Gaia satellite contains an enormous amount of information about the stars and celestial bodies that make up our Galaxy. With more than 1.8 billion objects observed, the release of the Gaia catalogue is one of the most eagerly awaited events in the astronomical community and promises significant scientific benefits. Within the European consortium in charge of processing and analysing the enormous amount of data collected by the Gaia satellite, the expertise of Belgian researchers, amongst others astronomers from ULiège, plays an important role and their contribution is significant.

ULiège at the origin of a unique liquid mirror telescope in the Indian Himalayas
While most telescopes use solid mirrors to look at the sky, Indian, Canadian and Belgian scientists decided to develop a liquid mirror telescope for looking at the sky: the International Liquid Mirror Telescope (ILMT). Located at Devasthal Peak (2450 metres above sea level) in the central Himalayan range of India, this innovative instrument was designed and built by AMOS in cooperation with CSL.

Telespazio Belgium involved in drone safety
On Wednesday the 13th of April 2022, Telespazio Belgium had run the Site Acceptance Test for its project Cytef at the Droneport of Sint-Truiden (Belgium). This important event aims to show the capabilities developed in this project and the potential of further development of Cytef. The Cyber security Test & Evaluation Facility (Cytef), is an infrastructure able to perform security and resilience tests on drones for what concerns attacks in the navigation, RF communication and cybersecurity domain.

AMOS is proud to be part of the pharaonic project which is to build the largest ground telescope ever built before. Our contribution included estimating the impact of some design choices on the telescope final optical performance, supporting the design of the telescope main axis control system to ensure proper telescope movement and tracking. In addition, we contributed to defining testing and integration activities related to some telescope critical items.

SABCA Boards the World's Largest Airship with Innovative Technology
The aerospace company Sabca will develop and supply the electromechanical actuators for the flight controls of the world's largest airship, the LCA60T (Large Capacity Airship 60 Tons) project designed by the French startup Flying Whales. Sabca will equip the airship with innovative technology, the result of expertise developed in the field of space launchers and transposed to other applications.
